There will be no heaven unless we make it and it is a very poor theodicy which teaches that we are not to 'prepare' this world but only to 'prepare for' another.
Florence Nightengale
So when the great word "Mother!" rang once more, I saw at last its meaning and its place; Not the blind passion of the brooding past, But Mother -- the World's Mother -- come at last, To love as she had never loved before -- To feed and guard and teach the human race.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman
The Universal Remedy
All of us are burdened by the sorrow and pain of past experiences. All of us have numerous festering wounds. The cure for these wounds is love and compassion for others. Love is the universal remedy.
Amma [from Messages from Amma: In the Language of the Heart edited by Janine Canan, Celestial Arts 2004]
It is easier to live through someone else than to become complete yourself.
Betty Friedan [The Feminine Mystique, 1963 ]
Beth could not reason upon or explain the faith that gave her courage and patience to give up life, and cheerfully wait for death. Like a confiding child, she asked no questions, but left everything to God and nature, Father and Mother of us all, feeling sure that they, and they only, could teach and strengthen heart and spirit for this life and the life to come.
Louisa May Alcott [Little Women]
Have we not all, amid life’s petty strife, Some pure ideal of a nobler life, That once seemed possible? We have, and yet We lost it in the daily jar and fret, And now live idle in a vain regret. But still our place is kept, and it will wait, Ready for us to fill it, soon or late. No star is lost we once have seen; We always may be what we might have been.
Adelaide Anne Proctor (1825-1864)
If we make our goal to live a life of compassion and unconditional love, then the world will indeed become a garden where all kinds of flowers can bloom and grow.
Elisabeth KüBler-Ross
Natural things and spiritual; Who separates those two In art, in morals, or the social drift, Tears up the bond of nature, and brings death, Paints futile pictures, writes unreal verse, Leads vulgar days, deals ignorantly with men, Is wrong, in short, at all points.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)
I do not wish women have power over men; but over themselves.
Mary Wollstonecraft
Behold, we live through all things,—famine, thirst, Bereavement, pain; all grief and misery, All woe and sorrow; life inflicts its worst On soul and body,—but we can not die, Though we be sick and tired and faint and worn,— Lo, all things can be borne!
Elizabeth Akers Allen (1832–1911) [from Endurance]
We are not human beings learning to be spiritual; we are spiritual beings learning to be human.
Jacquelyn Small
Happiness must be cultivated. It is like character. It is not a thing to be safely let alone for a moment, or it will run to weeds.
Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844-1911)
