How to be in the World

Stillness Being Heard May All Beings Be At Ease
Artist Statement
My work is a figurative presentation deriving from a process of spiritual inquiry. My paintings depict highly evolved responses to suffering and to the problems of negotiating differences and overcoming fear.
Metaphors for the end of war and the transmutation of violence into enlightenment are communicated through an iconography of hand-gesture, posture and object. The work also conveys these themes through an exploration of materials and their meanings, such as gold leaf, Color Field theory, the Golden Mean, etc.
Influences range from Kamakura- era Japanese sculpture to the paintings of Rothko and Michelangelo, from the visionary art of Tibet to the Fayoum paintings of 2nd C. Egypt.
